# How do I build a chapter menu that lets viewers review completed sections?

Topic: [Interactions and logic](https://mindstamp.com/help/interactions) · Updated: 2026-09-25

## Short answer

Put a menu at the start of the video with one button for each section. Each button uses **Change Time** to jump to its section. At the end of each section, a **Set Variable** navigation marks it done and a **Change Time** navigation returns the viewer to the menu. Every button stays clickable, so viewers can review any section.

## Steps

1. Plan the timecodes: a short menu segment at the start, for example 0:00 to 0:10, then each section in order.
2. One second into the menu segment, add a **Pause** navigation from **More** > **Playback & Navigation** and leave **Pause Length** at **Until interaction**, so the menu waits for a choice.
3. Add one button for each section, shown for the whole menu segment. Set **Click Action** to **Change Time** and select the start of the section.
4. In each button’s **Settings**, set **Post Click State** to **Change Colors** so visited sections look different. Do not use **Hidden** or **Disabled**, or the viewer cannot review.
5. At the last second of each section, add a **Set Variable** navigation, for example section_1 with the value done.
6. Just after it, add a **Change Time** navigation that returns to the start of the menu, before the **Pause**, so the menu waits again.
7. On the menu, add a text interaction “Completed” next to each button, with **Conditional Logic** set to **Show if** section_1 **Exists**.
8. Add a Finish button that jumps to the closing section, and show it only when the required sections are done (see below).
9. Test the whole path in **Preview**.

## Show Finish only after every section

An interaction can test two conditions at most. For two sections, set Finish to **Show if** section_1 **Exists** **AND** section_2 **Exists**.

For three or more sections, count them. At the end of each section, before the **Set Variable** for that section, add a **Set Variable** navigation for completed and click **Increment +1**. Give it **Conditional Logic**: **Show if** section_1 **Does not exist**, so a review does not count twice. Then show Finish if completed **Is a number greater than** the number of sections minus one.

## Add chapters to the progress bar

The **Chapters** tab adds named points that viewers can jump to from the player. Chapters help viewers find a section. They do not set variables, so keep the menu buttons for tracking what is done.

## Limits that affect completion

- Watch percentage counts each second of the video once. A section watched twice does not raise it, and a section the viewer never opens lowers it.
- If a completion email or certificate needs a minimum completion, set a value that a viewer can reach by watching every section once.
- Variables and post-click colors last for the viewing session. A viewer who returns later on another link starts with an empty menu.
- Conditional logic is on Pro and higher plans, and variables on Core and higher.

## Test and expected result

In **Preview**, do this test:

- Open section 1 from the menu. Expected: it plays, then returns to the menu, and “Completed” shows next to section 1.
- Open section 1 again. Expected: it plays again and returns to the menu. Finish is still hidden.
- Complete every section. Expected: Finish appears and jumps to the closing section.

## Sections as separate videos

If each section is its own video, make the menu a video of its own. Each button uses **Switch Video**, and each section ends with a **Switch to Previous Video** navigation, which returns to the menu at the time the viewer left. Variables carry over, so the same “Completed” rules work.
