# How do I add a “Try again” button with conditional logic?

Topic: [Interactions and logic](https://mindstamp.com/help/interactions) · Updated: 2026-09-25

## Short answer

Store the viewer’s answer in a variable, show a **Try again** button only when the answer is wrong, and give the button a **Change Time** click action that returns to the explanation. If you do not need a button, turn on **Repeat Until Correct** on the question, or set each wrong answer’s **Action** to **Change Time**.

## Steps

1. Add a multiple-choice question and mark the **Correct Answer**.
2. In the question’s **Variables** section, turn on **Set individual variables**. Give every answer the same variable, such as q1, and a value: right for the correct answer, wrong for the others.
3. Add a button with the text Try again, a short time after the question.
4. In the button’s **Content** section, set **Click Action** to **Change Time** and select the start of the explanation.
5. In the button’s **Variables & Logic** section, turn on **Conditional Logic** and set **Show if** q1 **Equals** wrong.
6. Tell the viewer what to look for on the second pass, for example with a text interaction next to the button.
7. Test in **Preview**: answer wrong, use the button, then answer right on the second pass.

_Turn on Set individual variables, then choose a variable and a value for each answer._

## Three ways to build a retry

- **Repeat Until Correct** on the question: the viewer must answer correctly before they can move on. No variable is needed.
- An **Action** on each wrong answer: set it to **Change Time** to send the viewer back to the explanation as soon as they answer.
- A variable and a conditional button, as in the steps above: the viewer sees their result and chooses to review.

## Make sure there is a way out

When the viewer answers correctly, q1 changes to right and the **Try again** button disappears. Check this in **Preview**.

Decide what happens after several wrong answers. You can count attempts with a variable: set its value with **Increment +1** on the wrong answers, then show a Continue button when the count **Is a number greater than** 2.

## Expected result

A viewer who answers wrong sees **Try again**, returns to the explanation, and meets the question again. A viewer who answers right does not see the button and continues. Every attempt is recorded in the question’s report.

## Plan

Variables are on Core and higher plans. Conditional logic is on Pro and higher. **Repeat Until Correct** and answer actions do not need either.
