# How do I create personalized video navigation?

Topic: [Interactions and logic](https://mindstamp.com/help/interactions) · Updated: 2026-09-25

## Short answer

Store a fact about the viewer in a variable, then use conditional logic so that only the matching route is available. Give each route a **Change Time** or **Switch Video** action. For a route that runs without a click, use a navigation with a condition.

## Steps

1. Choose the fact that decides the route, such as role, product, region, or level, and list its values.
2. Set the value with a question, a click, lead capture, a link parameter, or a **Set Variable** navigation.
3. Build the destinations: sections of this video or separate published videos.
4. At the decision point, add one button for each route with **Change Time** or **Switch Video**. For an automatic route, add one navigation for each route from **More** > **Playback & Navigation**.
5. On each button or navigation, turn on **Conditional Logic** and set a rule, for example **Show if** role **Equals** manager.
6. Add a route for viewers who have no value, for example **Show if** role **Does not exist**.
7. Test each value: open the share link in a private window with the value added, for example ?role=manager.

_Turn on Conditional Logic, then build the rule: Show if, a variable, a comparison and a value._

## Navigations run without a click

A navigation is an action that runs at a set time, such as **Change Time**, **Switch Video**, **Pause**, or **Set Variable**. When it has conditional logic, it runs only for viewers who match the rule.

Keep the navigations for one decision at the same time, and make sure that their rules cannot all be true at once.

## Match values reliably

**Equals** ignores capital letters, but spaces and spelling count. Store fixed values from answer choices or buttons instead of free text.

## Values follow the viewer

A value set early is still available after **Switch Video**, so a later video can continue the same path. See [Do variables carry over when a viewer switches videos?](https://mindstamp.com/help/do-variables-persist-across-branches).

## Keep the model small

Write the routes as a short table: value, destination, and what happens with no value. Each interaction can test two conditions at most, so a small set of values is easier to build and test.

## Plans

Variables are on Core and higher plans. Conditional logic is on Pro and higher. Branching is on every plan.
