# Why can’t I record a video or audio clip?

Topic: [Videos and playback](https://mindstamp.com/help/videos) · Updated: 2026-09-25

## Short answer

Recording needs your browser’s permission to use the camera or microphone, a secure (HTTPS) page, and a device that no other app is using. If you see **Camera or microphone access was denied** or **Microphone access was denied**, allow access in the browser’s site settings, then select **Try Again**.

## Steps

1. Close other apps that use the camera or microphone, such as video call apps.
2. Select **Allow Camera & Microphone Access** (or **Allow Microphone Access**) and accept the browser prompt.
3. If you blocked access before, open the site settings from the address bar, set camera and microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
4. Check your computer’s privacy settings. On Mac, go to **System Settings** > **Privacy & Security** and allow your browser under **Camera** and **Microphone**. On Windows, go to **Settings** > **Privacy & security**.
5. Select **Try Again** in the recorder.
6. If it still fails, try another current browser and another network, then contact support with the details below.

## Who records and where

- Creators record **Video Clip** and **Audio Clip** assets in the editor with **Record Video** or **Record Audio**.
- Viewers record answers to video and voice questions in the player. See [video and voice responses](https://mindstamp.com/help/video-and-voice-responses).
- Each recording can be up to 2 minutes long.

## Recording in an embedded video

When a viewer records inside an embed, the iframe must allow the camera and microphone. The embed code on the **Share** page allows the microphone and camera in its allow attribute. If your website builder removes it, or your page blocks these permissions, recording fails. Test with the share link to confirm.

## Permission denial can persist

After you block access one time, most browsers stop asking. You must change the permission in the site settings and reload the page.

## Give viewers another way to answer

Some viewers have no camera, cannot give permission on a work device, or cannot speak where they are. If a recorded answer is required, add another way to respond, such as a free-response text question.

## What to send support

- The video link and whether you record in the editor or as a viewer.
- Device, operating system, browser and browser version.
- The exact message the recorder shows.
- Whether it fails in the share link, the embed, or both.
