Which embed code should I use: responsive, popout, basic, dynamic or oEmbed?

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Use Responsive for most pages. It replaced the older dynamic embed and fits any screen width. Use Popout when page speed matters most, and Basic iframe when your platform removes scripts. On platforms that support oEmbed, you can also paste the share link of a public video.

  1. Open the video and select Share.
  2. Under Embed, select Responsive, Popout or Basic iframe. The line under the choices says what the selected code does.
  3. Select Copy embed code and paste the code into an HTML block on your page.

Embed: choose Responsive, Popout or Basic iframe, copy the code, and optionally include SEO metadata.
  • Responsive: “Scales to its container and keeps interactions.” The player takes the full width of its container at a 16:9 shape, with a minimum height so it stays usable on phones. The iframe loads lazily.
  • Popout: “A clickable thumbnail that opens the player in an overlay.” Only the thumbnail loads with the page. The player loads and starts when the viewer selects it, and stops when the viewer closes it.
  • Basic iframe: “A fixed-size iframe for pages that block scripts.” It has no script, so a click action that opens a link in the same page may not be able to change your page.

Older versions of Mindstamp had a dynamic embed code that checked the device and picked a size. The Responsive code now does this job with standard CSS, so it adapts to every screen without a separate script. If you still use an old dynamic embed code on a page, it can keep working, but replace it with the Responsive code when you next edit the page.

Some platforms, such as Notion, Slack, WordPress and Ghost, turn a pasted link into a player through a standard called oEmbed. Paste the share link of a public video, and the platform shows the interactive player. This does not work for videos that have a password, an access list, a paywall or allowed embed domains, so use the embed code for those. If your platform does not show the player, paste the embed code into an HTML or custom code block.

Any embed type can include SEO metadata. Turn on Include SEO metadata before you copy the code. It adds structured video data (title, description, thumbnail, duration and chapters) and a collapsed transcript, which helps search engines understand the video on your page.
