How do I embed a Mindstamp video in Canvas?

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Publish the Mindstamp video and copy its Basic iframe code. In Canvas, edit a Page, open the HTML editor, paste the code, and save. To put a score in the Gradebook, import a Mindstamp SCORM package as a graded assignment.

  1. In Mindstamp, publish the video from its Share page if it is not published yet.
  2. Under Embed, choose Basic iframe and select Copy embed code.
  3. In Canvas, open a Page, Assignment, or Discussion and select Edit.
  4. Open the HTML editor with the </> button.
  5. Paste the code and select Save.
  6. View the page as a test student. Play the video and try fullscreen.

Canvas keeps iframe tags but removes script tags and tags that are not on its allowed list. The Mindstamp Responsive and Popout codes use a script, so use Basic iframe. After you save, check that allowfullscreen is still in the code.

If an admin turned on the Content Security Policy

Canvas admins can turn on a Content Security Policy under account Settings, Security. It is off by default. When it is on, iframes from domains that are not on the allowed list do not load. Ask the admin to add *.mindstamp.com, and your custom domain if your videos use one.

Import SCORM as a graded assignment

  • An admin must enable the SCORM LTI in External Apps at the account level. SCORM is not available in Canvas beta or test environments.
  • On the Mindstamp Share page, under Export, select Download SCORM package. This needs a Core plan or higher. Canvas lists SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions.
  • Choose a Completion Checkpoint of 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, 95 or 100 percent.
  • In the course, open SCORM in course navigation, upload the ZIP file, and import it as a graded assignment. Canvas gives it 100 points by default. You cannot change the import type later.

If your account restricts embed domains

If you set Allowed embed domains in Mindstamp, add your Canvas domain to the list. Otherwise students see “Video not available: Code 617”. See restrict embed domains.

Know which student watched

Copy link to Know which student watched

The embed does not receive the student’s Canvas account. To see names in Mindstamp reports, add lead capture to the video so students enter their name and email. A SCORM package passes the name and ID from the LMS instead. See viewer identity and anonymous viewers.
