What are common uses for personalization and variables?

Updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Use a variable when a value should change what a viewer sees, where they go next, or how the view is reported. Common uses are a greeting by name, an offer that fits the viewer’s role, a route to the right section, an answer that carries into the next video, and a link from your CRM that identifies the viewer.

  1. Pick one decision that a variable will make better.
  2. Choose one source for the value: a question, a click, lead capture, the link, or a Set Variable navigation.
  3. Use a short variable name and a small, fixed set of values.
  4. Use the value in text, in conditional logic, or in a branch.
  5. Test with a value, with an unexpected value, and with no value.
  • Greeting: collect the name with lead capture, then show a text interaction that says “Thanks, {{name}}. Here is your plan.”
  • Role-based offer: ask “What is your role?” and store the answer in role. Show the Manager offer button only if role Equals manager.
  • Routing: a button sets product=analytics and uses Switch Video to open the analytics demo.
  • Memory across videos: the value of role is still available after a switch, so the next video can skip what does not apply.
  • CRM links: send each contact a link with name, email, and custom_id, so the view is reported under that person.
  • Score messages: show a message only if cScore Is a number greater than 79.
  • Page handoff: turn on Append variables when opening links, so your landing page receives values such as role in its link.

Relevance matters more than a name

Copy link to Relevance matters more than a name

A name in a greeting is easy to notice. An offer that fits the viewer’s role, or a branch that removes content that does not apply, usually does more for the viewer.

Do not put private information in a share link or on screen. Collect only what the video uses, and write copy that still works when a value is missing.

Variables are on Core and higher plans. Conditional logic is on Pro and higher. Lead capture and video branching are on every plan.
